The Alden Family Mysteries were created by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Ms. Warner was a school teacher who wanted books for her students that would be fun and easy to read. Unable to find any children books to meet her specifications, she decided to create her own.

The Boxcar Children was her first chapter book and it was a success. The Alden Family children consist of Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny. These groups of four adventurous are active and independent children who tend to stumble upon a mystery or mysterious character in each book. My kids read them, and now my grandchildren read them – they adventures are timeless.

Gertrude Chandler Warner wrote the first nineteen early reader chapter books in the Boxcar Children Mystery book series. But after her death there was a need to fill that void so different writers have contributed books to The Alden Family Mysteries series. The original books may be a bit dated to today’s young readers, but they are still and enjoyable read.

The chapter books are for children four-years-old and older. The Boxcar Children Mystery books have less than two hundred pages. There are a few sketches for the children to use as visual clues. And as Gertrude Chandler Warner wanted, the books are fun and easy to read.

Gertrude Chandler Warner originally titled the series The Alden Family Mysteries. They are now known as The Boxcar Children Mysteries. The titles are used interchangeably by people.

Add to your child's reading repertoire by presenting books that reflect their interests. The Boxcar Children Mysteries are for children who love mysteries. Encourage your child or grandchild to begin reading a series. They will then search for the other books in the series on their own.
